Just in September: How to Claim Your Tax Cashback in Rio de Janeiro

Did you know that every September, the city of Rio de Janeiro gives its citizens a small refund based on their service expenses from the last three years? This initiative, known as the Tax Cashback Program, is designed to encourage residents to always request invoices linked to their CPF. By doing so, you not only ensure transparency but also support fair tax practices among local businesses.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to check your balance and redeem your cashback.

Step 1: Access the Nota Carioca Portal

On the right-hand side of the page, enter your CPF and click Consultar.

Step 2: Login or Register

If you already have a password, log in.
If not, click “não possui Senha” to register.

💡 Tip: If you have a Brazilian driver’s license, registration is much easier.

Step 3: Check Your Balance

After logging in, you’ll see your cashback balance.

The amount equals 0.2% (one five-hundredth) of your service-related expenses (doctor’s visits, school fees, contractors, etc.) registered under your CPF (via Nota Carioca) over the past three years.

For example:
If your expenses totaled R$131,000, your cashback would be R$262.

Step 4: Redeem Your Cashback

Previously, you could transfer the cashback directly to your bank account. That option is no longer available.

Instead, you can apply your balance toward your property tax (IPTU) in Rio de Janeiro. To do this, simply select:

“Solicitar abatimento de IPTU”

If you are responsible for paying your own property tax, this is straightforward.

If not, there’s also the option of transferring your credit to someone else’s IPTU account. For example, the author of the original guide offers to credit it to their account and then transfer 80% of the value back to you

✅ And that’s it! You’ve successfully claimed your tax cashback.
